Craniofacial sutures. Development, disease and treatment (2008)

This book, edited by David Rice, is a valuable compendium on the many biological aspects related to the sutures of the cranium and of the face. Leading experts in the field, both clinicians and researchers, have contributed to the discussion on the morphogenesis of the craniofacial sutures from developmental, molecular, and genetic points of view. A fundamental concept reiterated in the book is that cranial sutures are not only adaptive growth sites but also active growth sites that may influence the changes of the rest of the craniofacial region.

The book comprises 12 chapters, with 44 figures and 10 tables. The references are relatively contemporaneous (2005). The chapters are well organized and easy to follow for the reader.

Whereas the biological discussion is rich, and the different aspects of molecular aetiology of developmental defects are widely reported, with special emphasis on craniosynostosis, the clinical impact of the biological features of the sutures on the growth of the facial structures is more limited. This would be important in terms of interactions with the expected outcomes of dentofacial orthopaedics.
