Oral pathology is the study of the causes and effects of oral disease, an understanding of which is essential for diagnosis and for development of rational treatment and preventive programmes. Updated and thorough knowledge in oral pathology is therefore a prerequisite for good dental treatment.

The new edition of Oral pathology fulfils all the requirements of a textbook on this subject. The book is systematically organized, which makes it easy to gain access to the area of interest. There are 17 chapters, of which the first four cover disorders of teeth and dental caries, and one disease of the periodontium. The remaining 12 chapters cover cysts and tumours of the jaws and oral soft tissues, infections, ulcerations and vesuculobullous lesions, as well as diseases of the salivary glands, bones and temporomandibular joints. Each disorder is mentioned briefly with clinical and radiographic features, followed by a more thorough survey of pathogenesis and histopathology. The text is supplemented by more than 500 full colour illustrations of high quality, including clinical, radiographic and histopathological details. In addition, this fourth edition has been updated to a more modern design with key points and well arranged tables, which help the reader identify the most important aspects of a disease. There is also an updated list of references for further reading at the end of each chapter.

During the last decade, there have been major advances especially in molecular biology and genetics, which have increased our understanding of several oral and maxillofacial diseases. This new edition of Oral pathology is an updated version including results from the most recent research on important disorders, for instance the development of teeth and craniofacial anomalies and genetic susceptibility to oral cancer.

The book is well suited as a text for undergraduate dental students, but it will also be of great value to postgraduate students and to dental practitioners and colleagues in other fields of medicine who want a brief, but perspicuous overview of oral pathology.
