Analysis of the effect of face mask therapy at a relatively late stage in the growth period showed a marked influence on the dentoalveolar structures. The appliance is obviously a valuable adjunct in the orthodontic management of CLP cases even though an effect on the basal part of the maxilla could hardly be discerned.
The orthopaedic effect on the premaxilla in the bilateral case represented a marked difference in the reactions to face mask therapy in the two types of clefts. Based on the relapse of the premaxilla which was experienced in the present case it is recommended that a fixed stabilizing appliance be fitted before secondary bone grafting and maintained for at least three months post-operatively.
