A method is described using steroscopic radiography for the location of unerupted teeth in the anterior maxilla. An acrylic control box with radio-opaque markers in known positions is used to specify points on stereo occlusal films and relate them to the occlusal plane. After digitization of these points, distances between any identifiable points or perpendiculars to planes may be calculated by means of a microcomputer program. The method has been assessed using an acrylic artefact and a dried skull and found to give measurement error within 0.35 mm. Because a cephalometer is not required and because analysis can be undertaken using a digitizer and microcomputer, the method described is simpler than previous applications of x-ray photogrammetry- Possible clinical applications are discussed.
