Patients with myotonic dystrophy have a unique facial appearance. In order to contribute to the characterization of this phenomenon, we have analysed clinical and radiographic parameters in 24 patients and compared the morphologic and functional aspects of the stomatognathic system with those of a control group. Significant findings were: greatly reduced strength of the orbicularis oris muscle; excessive interocclusal distance; increased face height and depth of palatal vault; narrow maxillary arch; increased percentage of crossbite, open bite, tongue thrust and mouth breathing; smaller maximum mandibular opening; and lack of retrusive movement from the maximum intercuspation.
