With progress in clinical orthodontics and the related science the number of orthodontists has increased to the point where many Western countries may have an excess of manpower in the near future. There are limitations to the increase in the number of children that can be treated and there are dental and ethical restrictions on the extension of adult orthodontics. The money spent on orthodontics must be considered in relation to the total national budget and the money available for the medical and dental services. Training more doctors and dentists than are needed will not only lead to underemployment but may also affect treatment procedures unfavourably. Regulation of the intake of dental and orthodontic students is advocated on the basis not only of national predicted requirements but also on the basis of the needs of the European Common Market.
