Observations from a series of 62 patients who had sustained burns of the mouth in infancy are reported. A brief review of the basic characteristic of this unusual type of injury is presented. The surgical management followed conservative principles allowing spontaneous healing followed by secondary reconstructive procedures. The orthodontic observations from this series indicated a clear relation between the anatomical site of the damage and the type of malocclusion. The characteristic malocclusions associated with burns of the upper and the lower lip and the tongue are described. The joint efforts of the plastic surgeon and the orthodontist in the rehabilitation of children who had sustained severe burns of the mouth are demonstrated in case reports.
