Orientation of maxillary sutural surfaces

It has been suggested by Weinmann and Sicher (1947) that the major sutures of the face are arranged parallel to each other and are oriented in the direction of facial growth. This hypothesis has been investigated in 9 macerated human skulls (estimated ages ranging from 1–10 years) using a specially designed roentgenographic technique.

Overall it was found that the maxillary sutural surfaces were mainly sagittally oriented. The study could not confirm the assumed anterosuperior orientation of facial sutures. The existence of premaxillomaxillary and pterygomaxillary sutures could not be demonstrated.
